Accommodation along the Great Ocean Road
Clinging to the jagged cliffs that border the southern edge of Victoria, the Great Ocean Road has a striking vista that draws visitors from around the world. It’s one of Australia’s great road journeys, and like any good journey, it’s the sights along the way – and the places where you stay - that make it truly magical. From perfectly formed small, crescent beaches, to lush rainforests abundant in wildlife, the area is eclectic, and always stunningly beautiful.
The Great Ocean Road stretches along Victorian’s coast, from Torquay, south of Geelong, to Nelson near the South Australian border. The main draw card for most travellers is the Twelve Apostles, a sublimely beautiful arrangement of twelve rock formations (created by erosion over hundreds of years), that seem to rise from the sea and stand regally as guardians of the coast. To truly experience the wonder of The Twelve Apostles, repeat visits are recommended, particularly at different times of the day, and definitely on foot (there’s also a Great Ocean Walk). So if you’re looking to make the most of your visit, it may be worth staying in the vicinity.
The Twelve Apostles are located around Port Campbell National Park and whether you decide to linger for a night or several, there are plenty of accommodation options. You’ll discover self-contained holiday accommodation, bed and breakfasts as well as beach resorts. Victoria is also home to some quality, luxury retreats and further afield in towns such as Lorne, Torquay and Apollo Bay, you’ll discover superior bedding, fine dining and decadent spas. The variety of Great Ocean Road accommodation can cater for a variety of holiday makers including: couples looking for romance; groups of friends looking to eat, drink and explore and families that are looking for that ideal holiday getaway.
And while the Twelve Apostles are the most distinct of the Great Ocean Road sights they’re certainly not the only one. Travel the Great Ocean Road and you’ll discover golf courses with stunning coastal views, fine dining and finer wineries, and local produce to tantalise the taste buds. There are ancient rainforests amidst national parks, and an abundance of wildlife including dolphins, seals, platypus, koalas and those always spectacular glow worms (Melba Gully in the Otways is the place for your glow worm meet and greet).
The Great Ocean Road is an adventure. Wherever you choose to stay along the way – cottage, holiday apartment or luxury accommodation – the Great Ocean Road offers something wonderful for everyone. It’s a picture perfect holiday.
